Malawi Patient Undergoes Two-Stage Knee Replacement Surgery in India
Kondwani Dzonziβs Journey from Malawi to India for Two-Stage Knee Replacement Surgery

Patient Name : Kondwani Dzonzi
Age : 43 years
Gender : Male
Country of Origin : Malawi
Condition/Diagnosis : Knee Condition Requiring Staged Joint Replacement
Treatment/Surgery : Two-Stage Knee Replacement Surgery
For Kondwani Dzonzi from Malawi, persistent problems with his knee had gradually become difficult to manage. Movement was no longer as straightforward as it once was, and the limitations were beginning to affect the way he approached everyday activities. After discussing his situation with his family, he decided that continuing to work around the problem was not enough and began looking seriously at surgical treatment.
Kondwani and his family explored options outside Malawi and eventually considered India. They were looking for specialised orthopaedic care and a treatment plan that could address his knee condition in a structured way. His existing medical reports and imaging were shared for review before the journey, giving the treating team information to assess his case and explain the proposed approach.
The idea of a two-stage knee replacement required a little more explanation than a standard procedure. Kondwani wanted to understand why the treatment would be carried out in stages, what would happen between the procedures, and how the process could affect his mobility. Having those conversations beforehand helped him prepare mentally and physically for a longer treatment journey rather than expecting everything to be completed in one operation.
Travelling from Malawi to India was a major decision. He was leaving behind his familiar surroundings while also preparing for surgery and the recovery that would follow. Once he arrived in India, his consultations and pre-operative assessments helped him become more comfortable with the process and gave him an opportunity to discuss any remaining concerns.
The period around surgery was emotionally demanding. There was nervousness before treatment, followed by the practical challenge of adapting during recovery. Kondwani knew that staged treatment would require patience, particularly when it came to movement and rehabilitation.
Instead of looking only at the final outcome, he began concentrating on the smaller steps. Getting out of bed, standing with support, walking carefully, and gradually becoming more confident were all meaningful moments. The rehabilitation process became part of his daily routine, and he learned that progress did not always happen at the same speed every day.
His family played an important role throughout the journey. Having someone nearby during consultations and recovery provided reassurance and helped him remain focused when the process felt tiring.
For Kondwani, travelling to India was ultimately about addressing a knee problem through a carefully planned surgical journey. The experience required preparation, patience, and a willingness to work through each stage rather than expect an immediate return to normal activities.
Looking back on his experience, Kondwani said:
βWhat I found hardest was knowing that my treatment would happen in stages. I wanted to understand why that was necessary and what I would have to manage between the procedures. Once the doctors explained the plan, I felt much more prepared. The recovery period was not something I could rush, so I learned to pay attention to small thingsβstanding a little longer, taking another few steps, and becoming more confident each day. Travelling from Malawi was a big decision, but having my family support me throughout made the experience easier to handle.β
Thank You
