Just a handful of Orthopedic Surgeons in Sudan
Sudan has been striving to improve its healthcare system for years now. Although fundamental healthcare essentials are guaranteed in the constitution of Sudan, the ground reality is quite the opposite. Sudan faces severe lack of enough medical specialists and specialized medical equipment due to ignorance and deficiency of funds. The preeminent medical staff has emigrated, due to shortage of better remunerations. The remainder medical staff neither enough competent nor has ample medical facilities to even provide the basic healthcare needs for the ailing population of the country. The situation is even worse for complex treatments such as orthopedic surgeries. The surprising statistics by Sudan Orthopedic Surgeons Association (SOSA) show that there are only 50 Orthopedic surgeons for 42 million Sudanese!
So with just a handful of surgeons dictating this arena of healthcare, the treatment packages for orthopedic surgeries are skyrocketing. This makes it exorbitant for most but the well-off Sudanese, who receive the orthopedic surgeries on time. At the same time, cutting down the compensation of these experts would be worsening the situation. Therefore, for their surgical needs, the Sudanese have to look for places such as India, where such surgeries are readily available and at reasonable prices.
Inflow of Orthopedic surgery patients from Sudan to India
Lack of bone experts or orthopedic surgeons is a major crisis, which Sudan is facing for years now. Most of the population has to rely on Paramedics or Clinical Officers. So with not many choices left, patients from Sudan have been traveling abroad for medical treatments. Many travel to neighboring African countries such as South Africa, Mozambique, etc.; while some travel to countries as far as India, Singapore, Dubai, etc. India has been welcoming several thousand medical value travelers from Sudan since 2010. A surgery could cost 30 percent lower in India as it would in South Africa, USA or UK.
The growth potential of medical value travel business from Sudan to India for Orthopedic procedures can be estimated. Orthopedic procedures remain one of the top four procedures for which worldwide patients travel to India. One can estimate about 10 percent patients visit India for such surgical procedures. If 2,000 Sudanese visit India every year, about 200 would be visiting for Orthopedic surgeries alone. According to the International Journal of Health Management and Tourism (IJHMT), the number of medical tourists coming to India was 200,000 in 2016 and the number is continually rising. Cost is the key point of attraction for Sudanese to visit India for orthopedic treatments. But quality of the healthcare, patient satisfaction, brand name and the expertise of the surgeons are the other key drivers. Estimates are that about 17,000 Sudanese travel to South Africa, USA, UK for their medical treatments every year.
The findings by International Medical Travel Journal (IMTJ) show that the average range of savings in India is 65-90 percent. With numbers this big, one would wonder why the medical value travel companies and hospitals in India are not salivating like the proverbial Pavlovian dogs!
The result is several thousand Sudanese travelling to India for their medical treatments since many years now. The projected growth potential would be eye-popping for marketing departments at medical value travel companies and hospitals in India. With the right attributes like expert medical practitioners, most up-to-date equipment and most importantly low cost, India ensures to bring back the smiles on the faces of more and more Sudanese.
